During the depression, the logging industry was was filled with young men from relief families who signed up for six-month tours in one of the state's 50 Civilian Conservation Corps camps in rural areas. They were paid five dollars a month, plus room, board, clothing and medical care, while their families received $25 a month. Railroads have been vital in the history of the population and trade of rough and finished goods in the state of Michigan.
